You’re god damn right here comes the paragraphs because there were some inaccurate, gross and dangerous opinions spouted out in the first 20 minutes of this podcast. Opinions, mind you, that came from one of you who didn’t even bother to read the accusations leveled at Berganza. If you had, you’d realize the man has been cited by multiple sources multiple times for improper behavior in the work place. You’d also learn that he’s been disciplined for these actions prior to the latest accusation. That might change your opinion on whether or not his actions justify termination.

But Bug couldn’t be bothered to research because he’s off to that old chestnut of accusing comic companies of hiring non white males not based on their writing talents, but because of some made up quota forced upon them by an affirmative action mandate. Completely ignoring the fact that these decisions are based in business with a bit of positive PR. More women and minorities are entering comic fandom each year and if comic companies want to retain these fans, there needs to be stories that speak to them. This industry has had a long history of being insular and male dominant. It needs to change its ways to stay relevant with all other entertainment for adolescents.

Now I’m having a hard time deciding which is more disgusting, Rob Patey’s definition of sexual harassment or Bug’s explanation of the gender pay gap. Maybe going to the actual facts will help me decide. A simple google of the words sexual harassment reveal the definition to be “Unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature that tends to create a hostile or offensive work environment.”. So no, Rob, a woman doesn’t have to rebuke advances in order for a sexual advance to be deemed harassment. And you really have to be joking if you’re employing the “women are too timid to ask for equal pay” reasoning. Actual research:
    http://money.cnn.com/2016/04/12/pf/gender-pay-gap/
    http://www.pbs.org/newshour/making-sense/ask-the-headhunter-women-dont-cause-the-pay-gap-employers-do/
    http://time.com/money/4285843/gender-pay-gap-excuses-wrong/

Let’s end on this. Looking back on history, progressive ideas ultimately win out. So you can either continue to be olditrons yearning for the good old days which never really were. Or just accept that times are a changing and just get on with your life.

  2. Just a few minor things I would like to add to the conversation –

The lack of context on the podcast made it sound like Shelly Bond being let go was directly effected/caused by or had any relation to Berganza having an HR filed the length of his arm. They are separate. The debate spurred back up into the social conscience simply because someone who is beloved being let go vs. someone with a handful of (deplorable) discipline issues still being allowed to thrive. Any cynicist will tell you its because of money – Superman sells more than Vertigo – but that doesn’t make the decision to keep an HR nightmare on payroll any less egregious.

Also, some of the arguments Bug was trying to make inched closer and closer to sounding like reverse-racisim/sexism silliness. The inclusion of other genders/minorities into anything, because they have historically been overlooked for centuries, does not make it harder for any of us white people. Chill out. Life is not fair sometimes, but it is not the woman-that-got-the-job’s fault, know what I mean? Has there anyone that has edged out someone else on a gig because they filled a minority quota? Of course there is. Who cares, though. Brush it off and cash in your talent someplace else that wants you based solely on your talent. We all have burdens and deal with shit, some more than others. Arguing that it’s not fair for men and/or caucasians just makes you (the plural you, I am not singularly attacking Bug) sound out of touch and mildly ignorant.

Lastly – Kudos, all around, guys. Having engaging bitch-fests in a safe space is what the inter webs are all about.
