Hey guys, just wanted to drop a quick line and say that I enjoy the show and more often than not agree with your reviews. I’ve noticed you haven’t done an assterpiece theatre in a few weeks. Has that fallen by the wayside?

Anyway, I wanted to comment on the Infinity crossover event and Hickman in general.

Basically, ever since I became aware of Hickman during his FF run, I’ve found his storytelling (if you can call it that) to be needlessly convoluted bordering on incomprehensible. I get that he seems to be the anti-Bendis, more interested in Big Ideas and grandiose set pieces than intimate characterization. And I suppose that would be fine if I could make heads or tails out of what’s happening in his books. But Hickman just strings together scenes without much of a narrative to tie things together.

And as a sidebar, is anyone else tired of writers trying to be “cinematic” and seeing page after page wasted with splash pages of nothing but empty space, or the “credits” for the book and nothing else? If I’m going to pay a premium price for a book I’d like to actually get storytelling content for my money, not some comic writer thinking they’re Stanley Kubrick.

  2. flashlight1999 says:

So what does this have to do with Infinity? Well, for me it’s deja vu – I have no idea what’s happening in this story, no idea who these “Builders” are, and I have no emotional connection to the events depicted or the people being affected. I see that Thanos is attacking Earth, because Thanos must now be everywhere in order to promote the upcoming movies. Yet this confusing mish-mash has none of the fun or pulpy excitementof the original Infinity Gauntlet mini-series.

I realize that for some I’m committing heresy by criticizing Hickman, but I just can’t get into his stuff.

  3. flashlight1999 says:

You know, when it gets to the point where I’m not able to understand the alien dialogue without first fivuring out how to translate it using the decoder ring formula in the back of the book, then the comic has become more trouble than its worth.

Ok, end of Hickman rant. :(

  4. Another great one, guys. Just wanted to say that I agree with flashlight1999 about bringing assterpiece back, since it was so funny, and also bringing back the fucking with the audio in post-production like you used to do. You really created some interesting and disturbing sound effects in past shows. There was this one time when you remixed Ambush Bug’s laugh so that it sounded totally psychotic and another time when you stretched out Douche’s deep baritone so he went “good niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiht” for like two minutes straight at the end of one of your shows. It was really cool and fun. Bring that shit back along with assterpiece. Anyway, keep up the top notch work.

  5. Thank you for recognizing our voice differences DingDong, if one more person confuses my testosterone fueled vocal chords with JD and Bug’s girlish chortles well I’ll…probably do nothing, but it makes me angry damn it.

High and Squeaky = JD and Bug
Manly = Me & Matt. Difference between us, I actually worked to lose the horrible NY/NJ accent in college.

  6. RolandDeschain says:

honestly Douche, before i knew what you looked like, I thought you looked like Frank Cannon.

  7. W C Walker says:

The movie that James Gunn was did that Matt was talking about was Super. Which actually wasn’t bad, but I can never look at Ellen Page the same way LOL.

  8. “Manly = Me & Matt. Difference between us, I actually worked to lose the horrible NY/NJ accent in college.”

Hahaha. Yeah, dude, Adler sounds like something that washed up on the Jersey shore. Gym, tan, laundry.

  9. And now that you know I look like Rick Schroeder and Zac Morris, does it ruin the Podcast for you?

I actually had a girl tell me at a show once that she couldn’t read me any more because my surliness just does not fit my visage and it ruined the experience for her.

    I truly hope it’s a chick thing.

  10. RolandDeschain says:

Ruin, hell no, I mean I was heartbroken for like a week, but a Young Rick Schroeder meets old Zac Morris is almost as sexy as William Conrad, so I still get my kicks.

  11. Matt Adler says:

“Adler sounds like something that washed up on the Jersey shore. Gym, tan, laundry.”

I was once told by some out of town friends that I sounded like cast member of the Sopranos. Well, my appearance fits that crowd better than Jersey Shore, sorry to say. Not so much gym and tan 😛

  12. def says:

Battle of the Atom is a whole lot like the Age of Ultron. Time travel this way, time travel that way. What is real?

Not to pick a fight, but for the hate for AoU, and the love for BotA, I like them both about the same.
