It’s been awhile since a television premier has grabbed me so quickly and so completely. LOST, maybe. I think that was the last pilot that really got me invested in the story and the characters so immediately. I had no idea going into this show what the premise was, only that it starred “that guy who played Draco Malfoy’s pappy in the Harry Potter films.” As far as I knew, it could have been related to the motion picture thriller of the same name, starring Hayden Christensen and Jessica Alba. I am delighted now, to say that is NOT the case!
The basic plot is that our main character, Detective Michael Britten (Malfoy’s pappy) Jason Isaacs has allegedly survived a terrible car accident, which took the life of his SON. OR… is it that our main character, Detective Michael Britten (Malfoy’s pappy) Jason Isaacs has allegedly survived a terrible car accident, which took the life of his WIFE? Or… is it something else altogether?
As it turns out, our man Det. Britten is currently living two realities. For about 12 hours, give or take…he lives in a world where his wife is alive and they are mourning the death of this son, while also going to work Detect-ing things with his partner, played by Steve Harris (most notably of The Practice. He also sees a court mandated psychologist. Then he goes to “sleep” and “wakes up” in another reality wherein his son is alive and they are mourning the death of Det. Britten’s wife, while also going to work Detect-ing thing with his partner, this time played by Wilmer Valderrama (Fez, from That ’70s Show ). In this reality, Britten also sees a completely different court mandated psychologist.
Which reality (if any) is the truth? That is the main crux of the show, and it’s fascinating to me. Oh, and if that weren’t enough, it’s also a police crime drama. Our protagonist has two cases to solve, which strangely, share certain elements in common.
This show is top-notch all the way through. The acting, the premise, the writing…I’m sucked in. Maybe I’m just overzealous about it because just before-hand, I watched Once Upon A Time, which is a giant tub of dumb, but this was a great first episode and I can’t wait for more!
Have you seen it yet? What say YOU?
