Top 5 Movies to Inspire You…When I was a Kid in the 80’s & 90’s!

Growing up there were all sorts of movies that inspired me and made me think I could do whatever I wanted.  The only problem is that I was lazy.  The kids in these movies always worked real hard and had that one force to drive them to keep going till the pay off.  I would just say to myself, “WHERE IS MY MR. MIYAGI!?!”

Well, here is goes. My inspirada while being a dumb kid with all sorts of dreams, but no Yoda and why I am not president today!

5. Sidekick (1992) – This amazingly inspiring film starred such actors as Jonathan BrandisBeau Bridges, Mako and the man who strikes fear in the word fear Chuck Norris. When I saw this I related instantly.  The main character was a kid; I was a kid.  The kid was bullied and didn’t really fit in; I was right there with him. He had asthma; I HAVE ASTHMA!!!!!! So as you can see I lived my life through this film, hoping that I will one day be and awesome side kick to Chuck Norris.

The only reason you don’t see me on Walker, Texas Ranger, right there next to the man of which we do not speak of (for fear of being jettisoned into the sun), was because I didn’t have an inspiring, comedic asian guy to light my path.

4. Teen Wolf (1985) – This juggernaut of a film brings one of my passions right there to the front of the line, no not being a werewolf, basketball. Starring Michael J. Fox, we enjoy this zero become a hero with little to no effort.  Of course I would’ve loved to just do that, but that isn’t the best part of the feel good moment.  It’s that little moment in the film when he realizes he doesn’t have to be some crazy werewolf to win a basketball game.  Just sweat a lot and make your foul shots. My downfall with not becoming an All-star NBA basketball player today, I have a father that said I shouldn’t abuse the wolf part of me.  Thanks Dad!

3. 3 Ninjas (1992) – I know you are thinking WTF, but hear me out. This is a tail of three troubled young kids.  One with an attitude, one with a god complex and one with an eating disorder.  I only fall into the last one, but the  guidance they gain from their crazy asian grandfather, Victor Wong, is more then enough to teach them to kick the crap out of all sorts of trouble.  So much so there was a sequel.  Now I don’t know where I would go if I followed the path of a kid ninja, but I’m sure you would never know.  If you did, it would be to late for you. But alas, I was once again lacking in the crazy asian Miyagi wannabe department, so on to my next failure as a dreamer.

2. Caddyshack (1980) – This tearjerker was before I was even born.  Anyone from any time should see this movie, just to know what it is to be ok with who you are. We follow a bunch of different people in this movie, including Chevy Chase, Rodney Dangerfield, Bill Murray, Ted Knight and Michael O’Keefe.  The story I followed was Michael O’Keefe‘s, a young caddy with no idea what to do with his life.  He then realizes that the only way to get it all straight is to earn the caddy scholarship from the owner of the club.  He schmoozes the owner and turns into a douche, but then later realizes, with a little help, what his real goals are. In the end he wins the final showdown and the lessons are learned. My only regret is not having met Chevy Chase. I blame him for my lack of stardom and clear goals.

Well friends, if you made it this far you are crazy and/or depressed by now.  I commend you and how you feel as disappointed as I do after finishing this list. I would like to surprise you with my last choice because I kind of eluded to one choice, but I changed my mind at the last minute. No, my number 1 movie for inspiration was not The Karate Kid (1984).

1. D.A.R.Y.L. (1985) – You are thinking, “WHAT? What kind of inspirational, crack cocaine are you on Uncle Dunklenutz? There isn’t even a happy ending.” Well it is the good shit, let me tell you.  This movie made me want to cry rays of sunshine and inspiration.  But not to become a robot, but to rise against “The Man.” Those commie bastards we call government would definitely deny us of something as awesome as human robots. Think of the possibilities. PORN!!!! That’s as far as I got. But NOOOOOO, “The Man” doesn’t want us to get too carried away.  I bet you this was actual footage and the people just thought they were on some reality tv show called, “I Think my Foster Son is “Special”” or something. But enough about those pigs on Capital Hill. I wanted to say this, if I had a robot brother I know I would’ve destroyed the government and taken over a small island for myself by now.

If you have your own go ahead and post them.  I’d love to read them. Thanks for reading and I hope I have inspired you to walk away from your computer and go do something constructive.  Like build a bird house out of popsicle sticks or macaroni art.
