REVIEW: Master Filmmaker Mark Mackner

Welcome, you wild web-surfing wingnuts! Tis I, Poptards’ resident Spider-Man scholar and local indie horror icon MASTER FILMMAKER MARK MACKNER with an in-depth peek at’s hottest webcomic MOON GIRL!!!!

OK, first a little history lesson… Moon Girl was created way back in Comics’ Golden Age (1947, to be exact) and introduced by the legendary EC COMICS. Moon Girl (aka CLARE LUNE) is a foreign princess living in the US, who fights crime with the help of a moon rock that grants her “powers beyond mortal men” (Much like the Marvel character MOONSTONE, actually. Except that Moonstone is a villain, of course). That’s about all I know regarding the EC Comics title. And really, there can’t be a whole lot more to tell. The original MG run didn’t last very long, leaving plenty of room for a capable creative team to fill in the many blanks regarding the character.

Fast forward to the present, where Moon Girl is now public domain. Enter two insanely talented Philly comic creators TONY TROV and JOHNNY ZITO (Of ZUDA COMICS’ “BLACK CHERRY BOMBSHELLS” and “LA MORTE SISTERS” fame) who use their connections and industry savvy to get their hands on the property (Yeah, I know it’s public domain, but you didn’t know that, did you? And knowing is half the battle!) and have whipped up a thrilling new vision of Moon Girl over at!!!!

The first page of issue #1 puts us right in the heat of battle. It’s 1954 in NYC, and Moon Girl is grappling with her sworn enemy, SATANA. What I admire about Trov & Zito is that they don’t give you any prologue or background page. They just immediately thrust you into the action, and trust that you’ll have the intelligence to be able to keep up. Little by little, they give you clues and plot points, but they never give you everything all at once.

Just in that first fight, we learn that MG is a princess from a foreign land (Which, unless you’re a walking encyclopedia of trivia about obscure Golden Age characters, or checked the Wiki page beforehand, you had no idea), presumably Russia (Given a reference Satana makes about the Bolsheviks). Also these two have a rich history together. Satana was MG’s mentor perhaps, stating that she trained her how to fight.

When not battling the forces of evil, MG is a nurse at Bellevue, where she playfully flirts with a hunky doctor, and pretends to be your average gal. In one particularly funny bit, she handily defeats a zombie (with several witnesses looking on), then, noticing all the shocked onlookers, pretends to faint.

The zombie (and hundreds more, we soon learn) is the result of the fiendish plot of another villain, the SUGAR PLUM FAIRY. It isn’t long before MG finds herself locked in mortal combat with this deadly foe, who says such wonderfully super-villainy things as “Law and order are antiquated notions”, and “This is the start of Utopia!” Seriously, I LOVE old-school villain talk like that.

In fact, the whole comic has a fun retro/throwback style to it that brings to mind THE ROCKETEER, SKY CAPTAIN, and THE SPIRIT. THE SPIRIT comic, I mean. And hey, even if you didn’t like the film, you must admit it had lovely visuals. And personally, I loved The Rocketeer, and I thought Sky Captain was one of the most underrated films of the past decade. OK, you want something cooler? How about DC’s FIRST WAVE? It’s that fun kind of radio-era super-heroics and I totally dig that.

Trov & Zito have crafted a non-pretentious, breezy, action-packed yarn with a sexy heroine, dastardly (yet sexy) villains, and all sorts of awesomeness into a neat little package that you don’t even have to get off the couch to enjoy! The artwork, by a fellow named THE RAHZZAH, is absolutely stunning. He kinda reminds me of Clayton Crain. You can check out him and more of his work at
