Halloween Horror Countdown:29:The Catacombs

I had the impression that this movie would be a rip-off of The Descent, if only from the cover. But oh so wrong, was I. Just underneath Paris, the “city of lights”, is a 200 mile weaving labyrinth of limestone tunnels or, you guessed it: CATACOMBS! Dun dun DUNNN! If you are a bunch of Parisians looking for a good time and believe that fear is the only way through which to live your life, where do you party? With Slurms MacKenzie in the brightly lit Slurm factory? HELL NO, ya’lls! You get your dance on Zion-style in the dangerous underground! And then, god-willing, you get chased by a serial killer in a mask! THAT’s how they do it up in this piece!

Seriously though, our heroine is a very nervous girl on several medications played by Shannyn Sossamon (from A Knight’s Tale, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and Wristcutters: A Love Story) who receives a postcard from her craaazzy kooky wild sister, played by Pink (or Alecia Moore, if you wanna call her by something other than a color), insisting that she come to Paris to visit. First thing on the agenda: underground RAVE! Exactly what a nervous girl who’s afraid of the dark needs! Things go from bad to worse though, when her sister is brutally murdered in front of her and she is chased through the corridors of the underground. Will she escape? You’ll have to check this one out for yourselves, fellow ‘Tards.

I wasn’t sold on this movie at first, but I like Sossamon enough to give it a shot. And I’m glad I did. This is a solid thriller that just gets more and more claustrophobic and paranoid as it goes on. And while it isn’t a rip-off of The Descent, it did leave me with a similiar feeling, and that’s definitely a good thing!

Unlike the ending to Colvaire (The Ordeal), which I just previously reviewed…The ending MAKES the movie. Recommendation: Watch it!
