STORY: Dan Slott

ART: Paulo Siqueira

REVIEW: Master Filmmaker Mark Mackner

Hola, Arachno-philes! Tis I, your favorite Amazing Spider-Fan and local indie horror icon MASTER FILMMAKER MARK MACKNER with another installment of SPIDEY’S WEEKLY WEB-UP! No new AMAZING this week, but yesterday saw the release of SHADOWLAND: SPIDER-MAN, so let’s examine that, shall we?

This is more or less an issue of MARVEL TEAM-UP, with Spidey and SHANG-CHI, THE MASTER OF KUNG FU going up against MR. NEGATIVE and his INNER DEMONS. THE HAND are here, too, but despite the fact that this is a Shadowland tie-in, this isn’t really about them. So, what IS it about? Well, basically, it’s about what good friends Spidey and Shang-Chi are. Yeah. That’s about it.

If that sounds less-than-thrilling, well check out who penned this issue… DAN SLOTT. One of the BEST Spidey writers around. The comedy is golden, and there’s action on every page. Since the Inner Demons are unkillable, and The Hand go POOF when you stab ‘em, our heroes decide that the Demons are the greater threat. The Hand see that the heroes have taken up the fight for them, so they take off, leaving our boys free to focus on Negative and his men.

Negative saw the current chaotic situation that is Shadowland as an opportunity to expand his criminal empire into Hell’s Kitchen. So he moves in on the territory, and takes the fight to The Hand. Sounds like good news for a super-hero, right? Bad guys killing bad guys. All the good guys have to do is sit back, watch, and then take on the winner. But this is SPIDER-MAN, folks. If lives are being taken, it’s his job to put a stop to it, regardless of whose lives they are, and how scummy they might be.

Negative had corrupted Spider-Man once with his “evil touch” thing that he does (In the DARK REIGN: MR. NEGATIVE mini-series), and apparently, he can only do that to a person one time. So he attacks Shang-Chi, hoping to corrupt him and steal the victory.

My favorite moment is when Negative declares himself Spider-Man’s “greatest adversary”, then Spidey quickly corrects him, saying “Green Goblin’s my greatest adversary. You’re flavor of the month.” Awesome.

Nothing really memorable about the art here, and that goes for the cover too, but it’s serviceable. It’s also a standard-length issue, nothing spectacular about the presentation, so I think the $3.99 price tag is kinda unwarranted. But if you’re like me and you need your Spidey fix for the week, you’ll plop down the extra dollar and get a fun and breezy adventure staring our favorite non-mutant super-hero!

And THAT is THE WORD, so sayeth THE MASTER!!!!
