SPIDEY’S WEEKLY WEB-UP

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #644

ORIGIN OF THE SPECIES, PART 3

STORY: Mark Waid

ART: Paul Azaceta

REVIEW: Master Filmmaker Mark Mackner

Hola, arachno-philes! Tis I, your favorite Amazing Spider-Fan and local indie horror icon MASTER FILMMAKER MARK MACKNER with another installment of SPIDEY’S WEEKLY WEB-UP!!!! Today, we’ll be taking a look at Part 3 of MARK WAID’s ORIGIN OF THE SPECIES.

The action comes fast and furious in this one. We start with Spidey, still in possession of the Goblin Serum Baby, fending off an attack from NEW VULTURE, only to be attacked by Brand New Day villain FREAK. Vulture and Freak end up fighting each other, and Spidey tries to get a nearby mom to give him some formula and diapers so he can feed and clean the baby, but thanks to the media, she thinks he’s a kidnapper, and she flees in terror. Before Spidey can react, he’s attacked by RHINO, who’s still carrying the grudge against Spidey for the loss of his wife, and probably will for some time.

Meanwhile, the police arrive at the Coffee Bean just in time to save CARLIE COOPER from TOMBSTONE, who grabs SHOCKER and takes off. The firemen scour the place for anyone who might be injured, and their search turns up nothing. But Carlie doesn’t immediately connect the dots that Peter vanished as soon as Spidey appeared. Now she just thinks Peter is a douchebag who took off at the 1st sign of trouble, leaving her, MJ, and Harry to die at the hands of DR. OCTOPUS.

Speaking of Otto, he’s placed his very own “OCTO-TRACER” on Spidey, so he now knows his whereabouts at all times. From his setup at Kravinoff Mansion, he sends another mystery villain into the fray to snatch the child from our hero.

On another side of town, MJ walls up in a panic room with Lily Hollister, where she can be safe from Norman Osborn’s goons. Harry heads out with his own plan, but what is he thinking?

And all this time, Spider-Man is fighting for this child. He staves off Rhino’s attack, defeats MYSTERIO, and the team-up of Vulture and Freak. He’s won the day, and saved the child!!!!! What’s that? Twist ending, you say? GAH!!!! Poor Spidey!

Yeah, so not much in this one in way of story, but when the story is Spider-Man protecting a baby from a city full of super-villains, you just sit back and enjoy the madness! The pacing is frenetic (In a good way), the zingers are classic Spidey, and the villains are in top form! It’s great to see Rhino as a badass again, and not a joke, and I love that he’s in his old, no frills costume. The mystery villain was fun, too.

Azaceta does a fine job once again. His interpretations of Spider-Man and his Rogue’s Gallery are top-notch, but sometimes he falters a bit when drawing the normal people and ordinary citizens.

STORY: A+ Fun, fun, FUN!!!!!

ART: A
